  4. The  catalogs  contained in the Locale directory are for use primarily with
  5. Workbench  2.1  and 3.0.  They are automatically copied to your system disk
  6. by the installation scripts.

  9. How to localize PowerCache
  10. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  11. I have also included the source code required to localize PowerCache to any
  12. language  (standard  CatComp  .ct  (catalog  translation) file format).  If
  13. PowerCache  is  not  yet  localized in your particular language, I would be
  14. most  grateful  for  any translation you can provide me with.  However, you
  15. should probably contact me first, so I can coordinate who's doing what.

  17. The .ct format may not be particulary intelligible to you, if you are not a
  18. programmer.   However,  I have included the danish translation file so that
  19. you  can see how it's done.  There are a few important points that you must
  20. observe, when translating:

  22. · Make clear, understandable translations. Your target is a user who
  23.   has no understanding whatsoever of programming lingo.
  24.  
  25. · Try translating EVERY english word. Use synonyms for the hard ones. For
  26.   example, use "read-ahead" in stead of "prefetch", or "reserve" or "get"
  27.   in stead of "allocate". I'll allow some rephrasing in the translation
  28.   of the longest strings, but not too much.
  29.  
  30. · Leave words you have NO translation for, in english.  For example, if you
  31.   have no translation for "hotkey", don't try translating "hot" and "key"
  32.   seperately, in desperation.  Such attempts usually give meaningless
  33.   results (funny, but meaningless).

  35. · Certain technical phrases must remain in english. For example, there is
  36.   no official translation for "DirCache Filesystem". You can translate
  37.   "Filesystem", but leave "DirCache" in english.
  38.  
  39. · Cross-check with dansk.ct if you have any doubts about what to translate,
  40.   and what to leave in english.
  41.  
  42. · Make sure gadget and other GUI related strings still fit when translated.
  43.   Abbreviate if you have to.
  44.  
  45. · Some strings contain control information such as "%s" or "%ld". This
  46.   indicates that a string or number is to eventually appear at that
  47.   position, so you'll have to include this information in your translation
  48.   as well.

  50. · A \n means "new line". Include this information in translated strings,
  51.   too. Keep lines approximately as long as they were originally.

  54. Lastly, let me remind you that a complete translation requires not only the
  55. program  strings,  but also the install script to be localized.  Since this
  56. requires  some  basic information on how The Installer works, I'd prefer if
  57. you just translated all the english strings you can find in the script, and
  58. put  this translation into a seperate file.  I will then insert the strings
  59. at the correct positions.

  61. As  previously  mentioned,  translations  are  most welcome.  I aim to have
  62. PowerCache  100%  localized  in  all  the  standard  languages -- and a few
  63. others,  if possible.  I'm afraid I can't pay anyone for their trouble, but
  64. I  do  offer  a  life time free upgrade service of PowerCache to anyone who
  65. contributes a translation. Good enough?

  67. One  important  note:   Do  NOT  release .catalog or .ct files on your own.
  68. Mail  translations to me.  I will then incorporate it into the distribution
  69. and  give  you  proper  credit  in  PowerCache's  manual.  Further, I can't
  70. coordinate  anything  if  catalog  files  of  all  kinds of languages start
  71. floating around.
